The Future’s Bright!

Students have had a bad press lately, and rightly so in the case of those involved in the despicable scenes in London. However, closer to home we’ve had the opportunity to work with a lot of students recently, which for this accountancy company has been an absolute pleasure. Freelance World is now a Gold Sponsor of the Scottish Institute for Enterprise an organisation which aims to make enterprise and entrepreneurship accessible to all students in Scotland. We’ve been fortunate enough to support SIE events at Glasgow School of Art and RGU in Aberdeen recently.

In addition to this, we’ve also supported the Scottish Agricultural College’s Business Planning competition across all three sites in Aberdeen, Edinburgh & Ayr. This has involved spending time working with the students on what makes a good business plan and then judging the final competition. This was done in the Board Room at Aberdeen, with me & two lecturers on one side and the students on the other – it felt like Dragons Den! I was very impressed with the business ideas these students had, and also with how they presented to us. In many cases this was taking them well out of their comfort zones!

We also sponsored the Student Design Fair in Aberdeen last week, an event run by Student Designers The SDF saw 30 students from RGU, Aberdeen College, and Aberdeen University split in to six teams and given a variety of challenging briefs to work on for six local organisations (including two charities). The energy in the room was amazing and the creativity of the teams blew everyone away. It was a pleasure for us to be involved.

Being able to work closely with students from a variety of different backgrounds and disciplines over the past few weeks has renewed our faith in young people. These guys were bright as a button, full of ideas & creativity, great communicators with a quiet confidence. I think our future is in safe hands.
