North East Scotland’s First Jelly sets at Freelance World

The first Jelly in the North East took place at Freelance World’s Riverside Drive office in Aberdeen on Wednesday 6 April.

The co-working event was held to mark the start of the new tax year.

Jelly started in New York in 1996 and reached the UK in 2009. The purpose of a Jelly is to enable freelancers, self employed people and small business owners who work from home to escape the isolation of working alone and benefit from the company of like-minded people. While working they can exchange ideas and advice, chat and even collaborate. There is currently just one other Jelly in Scotland, held in Edinburgh.

As part of their office refurbishment which involved bright colours and open spaces, the team at Freelance World decided to move all their staff upstairs and turn the ground floor into a permanent co-working area, called Creative Space. The space doubles as an art gallery for 4th year Graphic Design students from RGU, giving visitors the opportunity to view and buy their work.

Michelle Barclay, Business Supporter and Jelly organiser, commented “We were really pleased to see a wide variety of freelancers and self-employed business people using the space to work, chat and network. There was a great buzz and it gave everyone a good opportunity to see the awesome new Creative Space for themselves and check out the students’ art.”

Alasdair McGill, Freelance World’s MD said, “We plan to kit out the Creative Space with even funkier desks and chairs and freelancers can have the opportunity to use this space for a small fee from 1 hour to full time. Freelancers are a key client group and we discovered, through getting to know them, that a flexible, collaborative working space was something which was much needed in the Aberdeen area.”

The 6th April event was promoted via Social Media including Facebook, Twitter and Freelance World’s own movie channel. Participants were encouraged to tweet during the event using the #FWjelly hashtag. Following the success of the first event the plan is to hold them monthly.
